Sokrates-Erasmus Program

Marmara University initiated the LLP/Erasmus Programme by means of the “pilot university” practice in 2002. After Turkey’s accession into EU Education and Youth Programmes as “full member” with the title of a candidate country for EU on 1 April 2004, Marmara University applied for the “Erasmus University Charter” in order to benefit from the Erasmus Programme. Our university, which was evaluated by the European Commission, joined the prestigious universities entitled to receive the “Erasmus University Charter” in Turkey.

Our university has kept its success, made a remarkable achievement and displayed a marked improvement in terms of the studies executed to increase the quality of the programme ever since it started to implement the programme.

The total number of students assigned abroad from the academic year 2003-2004 to 2009-2010 within the scope of Erasmus Programme is 1097. 95% of those students who received education for one or two terms, visited 230 different universities, with which Erasmus Bilateral Agreement was signed, in 22 European countries within the scope of the student mobility programme. The students could benefit from the educational, cultural, and social facilities of the universities.

The remaining 5% of the students had the opportunity to study as interns in various institutions (training center, research and application centers) within the context of the Erasmus student placement programme.

Our students who benefit from Erasmus Student Mobility are supported financially and can receive grants in accordance with the group of the country they visit and the amount of grant assigned for our university by the European Commission. Students can also benefit from the Programme without receiving a grant at their own discretion.

The success of our university in Erasmus Programme can be figured out from the number of guest students. Our university hosted 839 European students within the scope of the student mobility programme from the academic year 2003-2004 to 2009-2010. An examination of the annual exchange statistics of the Center for EU Education and Youth Programmes reveals that Marmara University is among the top three Turkish universities which are preferred by the European students to receive education.

Marmara University won the European Language Award for its performance in organizing the “Erasmus Intensive Language Course” for the foreign students who visited Turkey and took Turkish courses in 2006.

In addition to the student mobility programme, Marmara University also  enables the University’s academic staff to be assigned abroad within the scope of “lecturing” and “education” activities. 53 instructors of our university have visited the foreign universities with which contracts have been signed and lectured in those universities.

In order to present its students a variety of academic perspectives and viewpoints, Marmara University also invites instructors from foreign universities within the scope of the Erasmus Programme to give lectures at the university classes. 120 instructors have visited our university and lectured the students so far.
